results for hp after the bell, just a few minutes from now, the stocks up year to date; although, a one year chart, it's not a pretty picture. >> right. i mean, we can't forget last year in 2012, it was thee worst performer of the dow 30 component, so to see year to date doing better, it's not unusual for a bounceback. it's up going into the close, and, obviously, awaiting earnings. david: before i mention something that's done well today, we have to mention the stock market was trying to find a level. yesterday, of course, the fed beat down the market. they were concerned about whether the fed was going to stop quantitative easing leading markets overseas to go down, particularly, in asia and europe. we fed off their down day, and we are going triple digits. dow down 52 appointments, off the day's lows, but it's still down, nevertheless, jcpenney getting a big boost today, up 7%. why? >> right. so jcpenney, the deal with macy's, battling over the martha stewart products, and the low was 13834 today. we came up off the lows. still worries that the fed may cut off the cool laid in stimul

going on. >> reporter: according to the cpsc, hp was one of three companies using sony's lithium-ion battery packs which issued a voluntary recall in 2008, siting an overheating problem that posed a fire and burn hazard. a person is investigating the claim adding sony takes all reports or claims that could impact a potential safety issue very seriously, and this matter is no different. in all, hp has launched several voluntary recalls of its own batteries almost every year between 2005 and 2011 involving more than half a million batteries worldwide. of those, there were 135 reports of overheating. 94 resulted in property damage. and 21 reported injuries, mostly burns. >> this is burning. this was not easy to find. >> reporter: an hp spokesperson says they not only sent recall letters to consumers, but put up these posters in stores announcing a voluntary recall. >> if there was a recall on this, why are we finding out after our house almost burned down? >> reporter: they say they never did get any letter, but did get an in-visit from hp's risk management. >> the risk manager guy

of the struggling computer maker takes hold. and its shares take flight, rising over 6% in after hours trading. h.p. earned $0.82 a share, $0.11 better than wall street had anticipated. and revenues, while down at $28.4 billion, also beat the street. c.e.o. meg whitman has been on the job 17 months, speaking with investors today, whitman said she felt good about the rest of the year, and that last year's hard work was paying off for h.p. but, analysts say h.p. is not out of the woods yet. >> it's the type of thing that can be fixed quickly. this isn't going to take several years to play out so first of all it seems like meck whitman's vision is very much on track but we're not seeing that play out in the financials, but it is encouraging that guidance was better than we thought it would be. >> he also says he expect morse write-offs and pain from previous acquisitions ahead for hp. meanwhile shares close the regular session at $17.10 but as we mentioned earlier this were up as much as 6% on extra hours on the earnings numbers. >> still ahead on our program tonight, ford is hiring in high oy, please

-- i don't know. anyway. >> okay. hewlett-packard weighing in on the news in a statement saying that hp does not manufacture pcs at the foxconn site. hp has a very diversified supplier strategy unlike other companies who are more dependent on a single vender. there have been speculation that perhaps it was hp that had demand issues so foxconn was scaling back because of hp. >> though they had no particular customer. >> that's why no particular customer. anyway, hp, mike khouw, what do you see in the options pits? >> we saw quite a decided sentiment shift in the options market. because earlier today, it was mostly bearish, probably the most active was the 16 puts. but later in the day, the 17 1/2 calls, the weekly 17 1/2 calls, ones that expire at the end of the week, these things became most active. trading around 30 cents. over 20,000 of those traded hands. the sentiment going from mildly bearish to pretty bullish in a bet the stock could be above $17.80 by the end of the week. >> all right, of course more "options action" every friday on cnbc at 5:00. >>> still to come, investing on t

bottomed in 2009 including in that list hp and best buy. weis, go to you first. you have your pick here. >> well, hp to me is always going to be a value trap as far as we can see because they're in dead business. the printing business is dead and the pc business is dead. even if they break it up then you have two bad companies so i'd stay away. in terms of best buy it's a climbing business model. >> hp has certainly had an interesting move right in january? the interesting thing was last year hp was the worst performer in the s&p. bank of america was the best. then that is reversed. or the dow or whatever and then that is reversed for the month of january. >> a loft the performance recently in hp has to do with what's going on with dell. maybe some folks speculating a similar scenario for hpq. i don't know if i necessarily see that full disclosure in del. i did exit that position today at 14 bucks finally. i think with hpq fundamentally they are challenged and where the valuation is right now given those challenges the valuation is full. >> best buy is about as fundamentally challenged

. for more now on hp, we are joined by jason rowland. great to have you on for a little preview. there was not a a lot to be enthused about. margin pressure, revenue dipped lines across the business. gimme something to be optimistic about. >> things cannot get much worse for hp. the industry does seem to be getting better. as the economy gets better globally, hp should participate in that. shibani: what is the timeframe and that? what does your lens and tell you terms of timeframe? >> it will take years for hp to turn around about half of the business i operating profit. they are declining. other areas of hp's business are not as focused. it will take a long time to turnaround this company. over $100 billion in revenue there. that does not happen overnight. shibani: is this company better spent doing all of this reorganization under or of a private environment versus staying in the public eye? what are your thoughts on that? >> it is a fair question. hp is a lot bigger than those firms. shibani: the pieces of it are reasonable. >> it certainly is. i would like to see hp try to s
